The FINA Bureau, at its meeting in Bangkok, considered some anti-doping issues and a couple of innovation in open water discipline.

Anti-doping programme:

  • Investigate the introduction of the “biological passport” for athletes
  • Re-analysis of the samples collected in Roma with the occasion of the FINA World Championships Rome 2009 to search the presence of plasticizers
  • Considering the possibility to store the samples collected during FINA World Championships for future analysis for a minimum of 8 years

Open Water Swimming:

  • Launch of a team event (one man, one woman team time trial), starting from the 2011 edition of the FINA World Championships in Shanghai (CHN)
  • Creation of a FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships, starting in 2012 which will replace the FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships (last edition to be held in 2010, in Roberval, Canada). The Open Water Discipline is included in the FINA World Championships Programme to be held in odd years.
