Fina World Cup Berlin, more records fall in evening events

BERLIN – Four World and European records were set at the Fina World cup meeting in Berlin on Saturday evening, the opening day of the event.

South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh broke his own world record to take gold in the men's 50m breaststroke.

The world champion clocked 25.25 seconds to beat the mark of 25.43 he set at the national championships last August.

Australian star Leisel Jones smashed the world record in the women’s 100 metres breaststroke.

She clocked 1:03.00 to shave 0.72 seconds off her own existing mark set in April 2008.

Germany's Paul Biedermann set a world record to win the men's 400 metres freestyle and erased Australian swimming legends Grant Hackett and Ian Thorpe from the record books.

Biedermann swam 3:32.77 to beat Hackett 2002 mark by 1.81 second while Thorpe’s previous Competition record for the event was 3:34.63 (Stockholm January 21, 2003).

Germany's Steffen Deibler broke his own world record in the men's 50m butterfly, clocking 21.80 seconds, 0.26sec better than the mark he set last month in Aachen.

Diane Bui Duyet of France reclaimed the 100 metres butterfly European record placing second in 55.62.

The former mark was set by Therese Alshammar at the world cup meeting in Durban.

Germany’s Daniela Samulski set the new women’s 50m backstroke European mark finishing second in 26.21 [behind Australian Marieke Guehrer, 26.09] shaving shaving 0.02 off the time set by Sanja Jovanovic, winning gold at the European championships in Rijeka.

Finally, Melquiades Alvarez of Spain broke the European record in the 200 metres breaststroke winning with the new mark of 2:02.67.

He took 0.79 of a second off his personal best recorded at the Spanish Cup Trophy in April.
