Roland Schoeman and Cameron van der Burgh set some short-course world marks in the freestyle and breaststroke events, at the South African championships

PIETERMARITZBURG – Roland Schoeman and Cameron van der Burgh set some short-course world marks in the freestyle and breaststroke events, at the South African championships in the GC Jolliffe Swimming Pool in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday.

Schoeman, 29, of Northern Tigers Swimming club, reclaimed the 50 freestyle world record winning the heat in 20.30 seconds.

He beat the mark set by Amaury Leveaux at last European championships.

Cameron van der Burgh broke the 50 metres breaststroke world record when he clocked 25.43 to win the national title.

He broke his previous record of 25.94, which was set at a world cup meet in Stockholm last November.

Later, the 21-year-old world champion, set a new world record for the men’s 100 metres breaststroke semi-finals, clocking 56.39 seconds.

He shaved 0.49s off his previous mark set a World Cup event in Moscow in November.
