Spanish Open, new records for Munoz and Wildeboer

MALAGA – Rafael Munoz has broken the men’s 50 metres butterfly world record to spark the final day of the national championships in Malaga on Sunday.

Munoz, 21, won the national title in 22.43 seconds, breaking the record of 22.96 held by Roland Schoeman of South Africa, set in Montreal at the 2005 Worlds.

Saturday, Munoz and fellow-countryman Aschwin wildeboer set a couple of new European marks.

Munoz won the 100 metres butterfly in a time 50.58 seconds, shaving 0.01 off the previous mark held by Milorad Cavic of Serbia.

Aschwin Wildeboer, 23-year-old, won the men’s 100 metres backstroke title in 52.93 seconds, to lower the previous world mark of 53.06 set by Arkady Vyatchanin, last year at the Beijing Games.

Finally, in other highlights, former World champion Filippo Magnini of Italy has equalled his own national record for the 100 metres freestyle winning in 48.11.
