Michael Phelps won three Golden Goggles awards, including Male Athlete of the Year, on Monday night when USA Swimming honored the year's top American swimmers. Natalie Coughlin was chosen Female Athlete of the Year

Michael Phelps won three Golden Goggles awards, including Male Athlete of the Year, on Monday night when USA Swimming honored the year's top American swimmers.

Phelps won athlete of the year award, the male race (for his perfomance in the 100-meter butterfly in Beijing) and was nominated for the relay performance of the year (with Garrett Weber-Gale, Cullen Jones and Jason Lezak in the 400m free relay) for his historic performance at the Olympic Games in Beijing. He won eight gold medals breaking seven world records.

Natalie Coughlin, 26, was chosen Female Athlete of the Year, having won six golds at the Games.
