Biedermann beats Thorpe’s world mark in 200 metres free. WR Bal, Guehrer, ER Korotyshkin

BERLIN – Paul Biedermann of Germany broke the 200 metres freestyle world record Sunday at the Fina world Cup meet at the Europasportpark.

Biedermann finished in 1:40.83 seconds and beat the mark of 1:41.10 set by Australian swimming great Ian Thorpe in the same pool in 2000.

The previous European record of 1:41.89 was set by former Olympic champion Pieter van den Hoogenband of the Netherlands at the European championships in Dublin on December 14, 2003.

In other highlights, American Randall Bal set a men’s 50 metres backstroke world mark of 22.87. Fellow-countryman Pater Marshal, who set the world record of 23.05 four days ago, was second in 22.90.

Australian Marieke Guehrer surpassed the women's 50 metres butterfly world record; she beat Swede Therese Alshammar’s world mark by 32-hundredths of a second by recording a time of 24.99.

Alshammar, second in 25.35 in tonight’s final, set her record in Stockholm on Wednesday.

Finally, in the 100m butterfly, Evgeny Korotyshkin of Russia set a European record of 49.74 to become only the second man to break 50sec barrier.

The previous mark was set by Olympic silver medallist Milorad Cavic of Serbia, when he won gold in 50.02 at the Europeans in Dublin on December 12.
