BERLIN – With SwimNews. Helge Meew and Sarah Poewe have set the new European records for the 100 metres backstroke and 100m breaststroke respectively, at the German Olympic trials on Saturday.

Meeuw (SG Frankfurt) swam in 53.10 and has bettered his own mark of 53.46 that he set at the 2006 Nationals in the lead off the medley relay.

A year later this mark was equalled by Briton Liam Tancock at the Japan Open on August 2007.

Poewe (SG Bayer Wuppertal, Uerdingen, Dormagen) broke the women’s 100m breast in winning in 1:07.10.

The European record of 1:07.27 was shared among Anna Khlistunova (UKR) who won bronze in Melbourne 2007 and Emma Igelstroem of Sweden who swam this time at the national championships in Landskrona on July 7, 2002.

In other highlights, European champion Paul Biedermann broke a national record to win the 200 metres freestyle in 1:46.37.
