SYDNEY - Libby Lenton has broken the 100 metres freestyle world record at the Australian swimming championship in Sydney.

Libby Trickett won in 52.88 seconds, beating the old mark held by Germany's Britta Steffen of 53.30s set at the European championships in Budapest, on August 2, 2006.

She became the first woman to break the 53sec barrier for the distance.
