EINDHOVEN – Dutchwoman Marleen Veldhuis set a new world record for the women's 50 metres freestyle in a time of 24.09sec at the European swimming championships in Eindhoven.

Veldhuis, 29, beat the previous record of 24.13s set by fellow-countrywoman Inge de Bruijn on September 22, 2000 in Sydney, Australia.
