BERLIN – Two short-course world records fell at the Fina World Cup taking place in Berlin on Saturday.

Sweden’s Stefan Nystrand set a new world mark in the 100 metres freestyle. He finished in 45.83 seconds bettering the 46.25 shared by American Ian Crocker (fixed in 2004) and Roland Schoeman of South Africa (2005).

Later, Marleen Veldhuis of The Netherlands set a new world record in the women's 50 metres freestyle, touching in 23.58, shaving 0.01 off the time set by Swedish Therese Alshammar in 2000.

In the night's other final, France’s Laure Manaudou made a successful comeback to competitive swimming winning the 200 metres freestyle in a new European record time of 1 minute, 53.48 seconds. The former record was set by compatriot Alena Popchanka at last year’s SC Euroepans in Helsinki when she swam 1:54.25.

With this performance Manaudou helds 200, 400, 800 and 1500 metres freestyle short-course European marks.

Finally, Germany’s Antje Buschschulte became the second woman to break 27sec over 50 metres backstroke with European record of 26.94, lowering the record of 27.00 set by teammate Janine Pietsch.

In other highlights, Thiago Pereira of Brazil won the 400 metres individual medley and set a competition and South American mark of 4:00.63. Korean Tae Hwan Park set an Asian record of 3:36.83 in the men’s 400 metres freestyle.
