With two days concluded at the 2004 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships in Buffalo, New York, the UC San Diego women are third, still within striking distance of the lead, and the surprising men continued to hang tough, holding onto sixth place.
The Triton women, keyed by a pair of outstanding relay performances, one a gold medal effort, added 110 points Thursday, giving them a total of 251 at the halfway juncture of the meet. Last year's runner-up, Drury (MO) assumed the top spot in the standings with 291 points and three-time defending champion Truman State (MO) moved into second with 286. Cal State Bakersfield is one place behind UCSD with 186 points.
On a day that Head Coach Scott McGihon conceded is likely the weakest for both of his teams, the men also managed to emerge in good shape. Fourteenth at this competition a year ago, they now have 118 points, just two behind fifth place South Dakota. Perennial power Cal State Bakersfield is first with 381 points, followed by Drury (286), North Dakota (274) and West Chester (171).
The women opened the night's finals with a splash, setting a school record while capturing the 200 freestyle relay in 1:33.93. It was a classic match-up, all the heavyweights--UCSD,Drury, Truman State and Cal State Bakersfield--lined up side-by-side for what would be an early tone setter. Senior Carolyn Kwok and freshman Liz Whiteley swam strong 1-2 legs but the Tritons still trailed until junior sensation Rosanna Delurgio moved UC from third to the lead, giving gritty freshman anchor Emily Harlan (who posted a sub-22-second split) all the breathing room she needed. The win allowed the Tritons to wrap up the season undefeated in the event.
Individually, the UCSD women hit the scoreboard twice in both the 400 individual medley and 200 freestyle. In the former, freshman Susan Bell (4th/4:28.50) and junior Christine Hyjek (5th/4:29.56) reached the finals. In the 200 freestyle, sophomore Sophie Levy (12th/1:54.31) and freshman Monica Becks (15th/1:55.25) tallied in the consolation finals.
The foursome of Bell, Delurgio, sophomore Sarah Grant and Harlan closed up the evening's festivities with a hard-fought second place finish in the 400 medley relay (3:49.55). Harlan's final 100 freestyle segment, a lesson in how to finish a race, was significant as it allowed the Tritons to reject a late Drury charge.
For the men, freshman Andrew Harutunian, sophomore Mike Isaacs, junior Mark Tate and senior Rob Small teamed up to clock 1:22.87, win the consolation final and place ninth in the opening 200 freestyle relay.
Then, in the 400 individual medley, sophomore Ben Falcioni, fueled by quick backstroke and butterfly legs, logged the second fastest time in UCSD history (4:01.39) and touched fifth. Freshman Mike Lahey was 15th (4:05.53) in the same event. Like Falcioni and Lahey, senior John Pearce picked up points for the second consecutive day, taking 12th in the 200 freestyle (1:41.76).
Lahey, breaststroker Brett Going, butterfly ace Barnabus Sclafani and freestyler Tim Fuller collaborated for a sixth place run in the 400 medley relay (3:24.70).
The meet continues Friday and ends Saturday at the Flickinger Athletic Center on the campus of Erie Community College.
